JOHN STEVENS is a sculptor with an international background and following. Born in Albania and educated in Europe and Brazil, the artist brought his career to maturity in the United States where he has taught sculpture for many years punctuated with major exhibitions here and in Italy. Stevens has traveled throughout the world and his wide-ranging interests and humanism are reflected in work which is at once exotic and thought-provoking. The artist is a figurative sculptor whose human forms are often juxtaposed with those of animals. The figures themselves make diverse cultural and historical references while retaining an enigmatic, timeless quality. The sculptor works primarily in terra cotta, firing his pieces then hand finishing them in polychrome patinas which add richness and excitement to his beautiful craftsmanship. A year ago, inspired by his three cats, Stevens began a series which features felines and highlights their inimitable qualities.
