Julie Levesque

SCULPTURE, DRAWING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Sculptor and installation artist Julie Levesque continues to attract critical acclaim for her work. This year’s body of multimedia work focuses on the frustration and inability to impact change each of us feels as individuals in the face of global warming. Images of receding ice sheets in the Arctic in the media left Levesque feeling helpless but also struck by the uplifting beauty of those icy, white landscapes. Snapping images from her television screen, she printed them and started stitching them together in a fit of frustration. They lead to this body of work that recognizes that while she couldn’t  fix the problem of climate change alone, she could harness the beauty to make work that sparks concern and conversation. In 2001 Levesque took 1st prize in the Provincetown Art Association and Museum’s Annual Invitational Exhibition. As a result, she was invited to create a complete installation in the museum’s galleries. She is a past winner of the prestigious Massachusetts Cultural Council Individual Artists Grant as well as a recipient of the Artist’s Trust Grant from the Berkshire/Tatonic Fund. Her work is included in the collections of the DeCordova Museum and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and has been exhibited widely at venues on the east coast.
