RICHARD FOYE
RAKU VESSELS

RICHARD FOYE is a ceramist par excellence whose admiration for the classic shapes of Greece and the Orient is matched by a consummate skill at the wheel which allows him to achieve the same level of style and grace. In the words of the artist, "The form is crucial in the success of clay pots. The glaze is mere clothing to enhance the form. If a shape doesn't have dignity, no glaze no matter how spectacular will help." Foye's glazes do help however, although every shape he throws can more than stand on its own. Using coarse, light-weight clays, mixed by hand, the artist fires his vessels fast, in the primitive style, so that they bear dramatic signs of the fire. His vessels are a match in beauty and elegance for their inspirations ie. the Raku ware of feudal Japan, the luster glazes of Egypt and Persia and the smoke-fired earthenware of unsophisticated cultures. Foye's pots are the treasures of tomorrow.
